Biography
Dr.Joseph Smith has Over 25 years’ experience in the Chemical and Petrochemical Industry. Currently Dr. Smith serves as Director of the Energy Research and Development Center at Missouri University of Science and Technology (formally, Missouri-Rolla). Dr. Smith has published over 40 papers, has given more than 70 conference papers, and holds eight patents. Dr. Smith has contributed two chapters to the John Zink Combustion Handbook and one chapter to the Industrial Burner Handbook.
Research Interest
His current research interests focus on developing Hybrid Energy Systems which combine legacy energy (coal, gas, nuclear) with renewable energy (solar, wind, geothermal). He also conducts research on developing commercial scale processes to recover unconventional hydrocarbons including oil sands/oil shale. Dr. Smith was part of the design team to develop the Dow Chemical Coal Gasification technology (now ConocoPhillips E-GAS) and has founded and led two startup companies to provide engineering services to the petrochemical and fossil power industries.
